Key Summaries:

Sugar is a class of edible crystalline carbohydrates, mainly sucrose, lactose, and fructose, characterized by a sweet flavor.
In food, "sugars" refer to all monosaccharides and disaccharides present in food, but excludes polyols, while in its singular form, "sugar" normally refers to sucrose.
The other sugars are usually known by more specific names — glucosefructose or fruit sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc. Sugar production and trade has influenced human history in many ways.
The world consumed an average of 24 kilograms of sugar per year for every human being of all ages, equivalent to over 260 food calories per day per human being.

Amongst the ancient manuscripts of China, dated to be from the eighth century BC, one of the earliest historical mention of sugar cane is included along with the fact that their knowledge of sugarcane was derived from India.

Printing Press - Visual Summary

A printing press is a device for applying pressure to an inked surface resting upon a print medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring the ink.
Typically used for texts, the invention and spread of the printing press are widely regarded as the most influential events in the second millennium AD, revolutionizing the way people conceive and describe the world they live in, and ushering in the period of modernity.
The printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, based on existing screw presses.
Two ideas altered the design of the printing press radically: First, the use of steam power for running the machinery, and second the replacement of the printing flatbed with the rotary motion of cylinders.
In Renaissance Europe, the arrival of mechanical movable type printing introduced the era of mass communication which permanently altered the structure of society.
The relatively unrestricted circulation of information and (revolutionary) ideas transcended borders, captured the masses in the Reformation and threatened the power of political and religious authorities; the sharp increase in literacy broke the monopoly of the literate elite on education and learning and bolstered the emerging middle class.

Insulin - Visual Summary

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas which is central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body.
Insulin causes cells in the livermuscle, and fat tissue to take up glucose from the blood, storing it as glycogen in the liver and muscle.

Insulin stops the use of fat as an energy source by inhibiting the release of glucagon.
With the exception of the metabolic disorder diabetes mellitus and Metabolic syndrome, insulin is provided within the body in a constant proportion to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic.
Patients with type 1 diabetes depend on external insulin (most commonly injected subcutaneously) for their survival because the hormone is no longer produced internally.
Low glucose is known as hypoglycemia or, in cases producing unconsciousness, "hypoglycemic coma" (sometimes termed "insulin shock" from the most common causative agent).

Penicillin- Visual Summary

Penicillin (sometimes abbreviated PCN or pen) is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi.
All penicillins are β-lactam antibiotics and are used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms.
The term "penicillin" is often used generically to refer to benzylpenicillin (penicillin G), procaine benzylpenicillin (procaine penicillin), benzathine benzylpenicillin (benzathine penicillin), and phenoxymethylpenicillin (penicillin V).
Common adverse drug reactions (≥1% of patients) associated with use of the penicillins include diarrhoea, hypersensitivity, nausea, rash, neurotoxicity, urticaria, and superinfection (including candidiasis).
The discovery of penicillin is attributed to Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming in 1928
