A library is an organized collection of books, other printed materials, and in some cases special materials such as manuscripts, films and other sources of information.

The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing - the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in Sumer, some dating back to 2600 BC.
There is also evidence of libraries at Nippur about 1900 BC and at Nineveh about 700 BC showing a library classification system.
In addition to providing materialslibraries also provide the services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs.

Libraries often provide public facilities for access to their electronic resources and the Internet.
Many institutions make a distinction between a "circulation" or "lending library", (usually a public library where materials are expected and intended to be loaned to patrons, institutions, or other libraries) and a "research" or "reference library" (where the materials are selected on a basis of their natures or subject matter, and are usually not lent out).
